There was a time when I felt like I had been under water my whole life, and then I finally got out and took my first clean breathe. Now I feel like as I go along everything becomes smaller. There are differences between growing up, growing old and growing out. I want to find the sincerity and meaning in people again. I'm trying to keep my faith alive in the belief that there are pieces in every person that are true and authentic. We get lost but we need to keep those reminders within us.

Yesterday I was in the market with a friend playing some music and shooting some promo photos for an upcoming gig. When we were sitting down a man comes by on a bike, looking a little homeless and drunk. He began to talk to us and just then, I realize that I know this man. He was a very good friend of my fathers and didn't even recognize me. I remember him trying to to teach me chest up north a few years back. I finally mentioned my father and he lit up. He tried to remember me, but he couldn't. It was so sad, he was very wise. After awhile he goes to leave the park benches. Then looks at us and walks back. "And if you find yourself a boy, make sure he is nice. Life is too short."

Wouldn't it be lovely to make some memories

If you haven't caught The Kettle Black, you don't know what you've been missing. This man creates a somber closed in atmosphere everywhere he goes that is out of this world. He plays all these different kinds of instruments in his set up, but he is the farthest thing from a 'one man band'. Its impossible to take your eyes off once he starts.

My first time seeing the Kettle Black was Halloween, 24 Hours at The Center Of Gravity. Including bands Spiral Beach, The Miles, Boxes And Bags, Run With The Kittens, and Inside a Mind through out the night. It was around 2am, I was tired and all the 'Native Warrior' paint was starting to rub off my face. Drunk and half dead from the mosh pit, I watched this man dressed up as the joker set up some candles in a circle, almost as if there was about to be some sort of a seance taking place. People gathered around, sitting. Then... These powerful, dark, ambiguous sounds flooded the theatre. The energy was just seeping through every pore of his skin, something so raw and surreal. It left me speechless.

He never fails to create the same mood where ever he plays. This is isn't just a performance, its so much more. Its unfamiliar and frightening. Unconditionally incredible.

For those of you who know me, you know that I absolutely love Slim Twig. Its no surprise that the young, handsome Toronto bred artist is getting all the hype and attention these days. He markets his eerie rockabilly stature very intelligently. Not only does the music embellish this dreamy dark castrophany, but the poetry that comes through is completely spell-binding.

I missed his CD release, 'Contempt!', at The Horseshoe a few Fridays ago to go see The Miles instead (which I don't regret because they tore The Boat a new one, of course) but I do wish I had stopped by. His last release, Direct Dialect, left me completely satisfied and wanting more.

Although many were not fans of Slim Twig after Direct Dialect, I really encourage you to try out his new mix, 'SPIT IT TWIG'. You can download it for free at www.myspace.com/slimtwig when you click on the side bar with the CD cover. I haven't stopped listening to it since I caught it at Record Store Day at Sonic Boom during his performance. The first tune, 'A Black Hollister', sets the mood for the entire mix, while the second last song, 'Phantasm Inquest-Onakazabien Remix', pushes you back into a dream and leaves you in a thoughtful trance. 'Crack Of The Whip' unleashes some interesting lyrical patterns.

All of his projects continue to inspire and impress me. Seeing his performance live alone is fascinating. You don't really know the character intill you witness it. In a heartbeat

I first saw Heartbeat Hotel at my friends party/show back in November. I had never heard their name around before, so I had no idea what I was about to get into. Between the purple Christmas lights and the all the different noise pedals, they created this beautiful fuzzy atmoshpere. It was something completely different and sincere. To be honest, it really moved me. Seeing Heartbeat at a venue is just as fun, but there was just something very special about getting to see them at more of a closed in, intimate setting.
The Lonely Vegabound has this to say about the band,
"This is a sonic collage that shuffles through alt-rock, Krautrock, drawing on that droning avant-garde spirit of The Velvet Underground and The Fall. Manic energy of a band of a revolution in the making. " I couldn't agree more

Chad Vangaalen never fails to inspire me. After first seeing his animations for Holy Fuck - Milkshake, I started to hear his own tunes around. It wasn't long before he completely took over my sound system and become one of my favourite artists. He was coming into Toronto to play at the Horseshoe for a fest, but I didn't have any money. So I instead I went to MTV LIVE to hear him play a few songs. Almost no one showed up, so I had the honor of just sitting in front of him in awe. He never ceases to amaze me and really reinvent what it means to be a sincere and talented artist.

Drowning in dreams

Three miles into oblivion

Thursday was hectic. But I managed to make it down to The Horseshoe Tavern for The Miles Cd Release, Blood On My Blazer. It was a fantastic show with guests, Broken Bricks, The Craft Economy and Sadie May Crash. All of the bands possessed thier own neat style. When The Miles got on around midnight, it got messy. Shirts were lost, sweat was in the air, people were flying over other people... all that really awesome shit. Over all, it was a great night with some of Toronto's best. Congratulations guys.

The Ramones. The KKK took my baby away - With all three of the real original members dead at relatively young ages (Joeey, cancer. Johnny, heart problems. Bee Dee, Heroin overdose) they still leave this legacy that was not recognized soon enough. Inspiring a whole new era of music and young talent. This song was apparently written by Joeey after Johnny stole his girlfriend. Theres a lot of surprising stories behind this band. I recommend, "Ramones: End Of A Century" doc.

Elliot Smith. Baby Britain - I don't know much about him. But this song always relaxes me

Jeff Buckley - Grace. I just started listening to Jeff, and I feel born again. This is quite possible the best song I have ever heard. His vocals just shred and tear through your whole being. Its absolutely incredible, moving and musical. And with that, his music is not self indulgent, even though he makes the choice to go up and down scales at some times. He always came from a real place. Not to mention he was undeniably handsome.

AN HONORABLE MENTION, The Doors. Light My Fire - Classic. I wish they still had key board solos like that.

Hunting for virgins

For those that don't know, The Virgins are my 'boyband' weakness
Donald, with that overbite and funny voice. Nick, who is masculine but still portrays a nice vibe. And Wade, my personal favourite, who posses this beautiful sweet but sexy energy. So when I heard they were coming to Toronto, I planned months in advance to get tickets.

With a fever and a fake I.D., I made my way into the El Macombo on a Thursday night.
Anya Marie started off the night with an adorable set. Shes the kind of girl you just want to cook into a cake and share with everyone. After an hour, Lissy Trullie came up to do their set. (Lissy has to be the sexiest women I have ever witnessed. Ever)

They played a fantastic set, even with the randoms that came shouting at them for The Virgins. Then finally, around midnight, The Virgins came on

They played an amazing set. People were already hammered by this point, and fights kept happening. At one point, an idiot from the audience jumped up on the stage, and dove into the crowd... And landed on the stone flooring, trashed with broken bottles

And of course all the chicks there were on them.
Girl: Heeeey, we need some more bass over here!
Donald: Oh yeah? Do you want more bass, or a little bit more BASSIST! HAHAA!!!

Nick was wearing a Canada cap

My fever was terrible, but I did my best to enjoy the show.
